Points and Levels (High School)

There are two parts to Points and Levels:  an academic level and a behavioral level.

Academic:

The purpose of this division is to emphasize the importance of academic progress. RESA Academy is a continuation of the student's home school. As such, each student must achieve satisfactory academic progress in order to successfully complete our program and return to their home school with a probable chance of success. A student who understands that the purpose of coming to school is to meet the academic requirement for graduation and works toward this goal will have fewer behavioral problems. Academic levels will be denoted by Roman Numerals, ranging from Level I (lowest) to Level V (highest).

Behavioral:

The purposes of this division are to provide a consistent way to monitor behavior and to establish an environment that has a clear definition of limits and expectations. Motivational aspects of the program, for example, field trips and rank advancement, serve to reinforce and shape more appropriate classroom behaviors.

All students start at Level two. Teachers will review and vote for Level advancement every week. In order to advance to a higher level, a student must earn at least 80% (400) points for each week and receive all teachers' votes. To drop a level, a student must earn too many infractions, as detailed in the chart on the next page.

Each class period a student can earn 20 or more points: 10 points for behavior and 10 points for academics are the norm. If a student behaves inappropriately, he/she will not be able to earn as many behavior points. If a student fails to complete class assignments appropriately, as to teacher's satisfaction, he/she will not be able to earn as many academic points.

LEVEL ADVANCEMENT

Academic:

Level V passing 5 or more classes
Level IV passing 4 classes
Level III passing 3 classes
Level II passing 2 classes
Level I passing 0 or 1 class

Behavioral:

To advance one level, several requirements must be met: students must earn a certain percentage of their points for the week; students must not have accumulated more than a certain number of infractions, and students must have served the appropriate amount of time on each level. Details are in the chart below.

Level Points Drops a Level on Not Promoted With Time Required On
           Required Infraction # Level

   5 90% 3

   4 80% 5 3 or more infs 3 weeks

   3 80% 7 4 or more infs 2 weeks

   2 80% 9 5 or more infs 1 week

   1 80% 3 2 or more infs 1 day

   0 Staff discretion 1 day

All infractions are cumulative. For example, 12 infractions received in one week on L2 will earn a student a reduction to L0. (9 infractions earns the student a reduction to L1 and the remaining 3 earns the student a reduction on L0.

In some cases the student's behavior may warrant a reduction in level even though the number of infractions does not. In these situations, the teachers will vote to determine the student's level on a majority decision.

If a student is suspended for any reason, he/she is dropped to behavior Level One.

If a student has three or more consecutive unexcused absences, he/she is dropped one behavior level. If a student has three or more unexcused tardies during a week, he/she is dropped one behavior level.

INFRACTIONS

The list below is not all inclusive. Student will earn infractions for violations of any of the RESA Academy and home school rules listed here and in the home school handbook.

Students should work. Anything a student does that prevents him/herself from doing satisfactory work earns a student an infraction.

Students should not interfere with the work of other students. Anything that interferes with another student's work is an infraction.

Students should respect other miscellaneous rules established to make our school run more smoothly. Not observing these other rules is an infraction.

'ATTA BOYS

For exceptionally good behavior on the part of the student, a teacher may award an 'Atta Boy. These serve as the opposite of infractions. In calculating levels at the end of the week, two (2) 'Atta Boys cancel out one infraction.

This behavior plan is not all inclusive and will be used in conjunction with the RESA Academy Discipline Procedures and Guidelines. Changes will be made to this plan as deemed necessary.
